5 Expert Loft Conversion Tips

As a business that has completed over 100 high spec loft conversions we recently considered what we would like to know if we were a client about to embark on our first loft conversion.

Below are our best 5 expert loft conversion tips.

Engineering Matters – If the structural engineer appointed to the project does not consider the best way to maximise the space there can be a serious compromise in headroom.

Glazing – Often adding a loft conversion means a better and higher level view of the surrounding area. Make sure the location and style of glazing maximises natural light and the available view.

Ventilation – Modern building regulations ensure that a significant level of insulation is installed in any loft conversion. Whilst this insulation level increases a properties efficiency massively it can increase the internal temperature at the height of summer. We recommend ensuring that there an adequate number of openable windows and our top tip for temperature control is AIR CONDITIONING.

Roofing Materials – Ensure that the company you are hiring to create your loft conversion are skilled roofers with a knowledge of the products they are installing. Too often products are being installed incorrectly or substandard materials are being recommended. Poor products and installation of roofing materials leads to leaks and significant damage.

Certificate of Lawfulness – Most loft conversions are created under permitted development law. Permitted development law is clear and simple to follow making it easy for clients and contractors to understand. A certificate of lawfulness is a good way to get the councils rubber stamp when it comes to your loft conversion and this rubber stamp can support the process should you ever wish to sell the property.
